The Ski and Snowboard School at Pine Knob Resort is expanding for the 2018/19 season. Applicants must be 16 years of age and competent skiers/riders. No teaching experience is necessary.
Interested applicants should be skiers and snowboarders with solid skiing/riding skills who can be instructed on how to teach. An applicant does not have to be an expert skier/snowboarder; but must have good athletic skills, be able to communicate, have the ability to adapt their skiing/snowboarding style, and love to ski or ride.
During the annual hiring clinic, applicants will spend two full days on the snow learning how to teach and how to improve their skiing/snowboarding skills. At the end of the second day, the names of those who will be apprentice instructors will be announced. Everyone who the clinicians determine to have (or can develop) the skills necessary to teach, and demonstrate a positive attitude, will be accepted.
The clinic will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 and Sunday, December 2, 2018 at Pine Knob Ski and Snowboard Resort. There is no cost for the clinic, which includes lift tickets, instructor manual, and two days of hands-on education. Applicants must bring their own equipment and be ready to hit the slopes at 10:00 a.m. Check in at the ski/snowboard school desk between 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.
If hired, instructors are independent contractors and are not an employee of the resort. They will be paid on a commission basis. First year instructors will make $16.00 for a private lesson and $3.00 per student in a student patch lesson. Instructors need to be ready to teach at any time during their scheduled shift. Between lessons, they are free to ski/snowboard. Instructors will not be paid for the hours they do not teach.
Some of the requirements are:
- A minimum schedule of three times per week: M-F 10:00 a.m. until at least 2:00 p.m. or M-F by 5:00 p.m. until last lesson, Sat/Sun 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. until close. Checking in after 5:00 p.m. on weeknights is not usually acceptable.
- First Year Liability Insurance is $80.00 and must be paid prior to on your first day skiing/riding at the resort.
- Purchase of an instructor’s jacket (not required to do this immediately).
- Required clinics and continuing education.
The clinic is limited to 20 skiers and 15 snowboarders. Applicants will be notified by email if accepted. Apply at applications and email questions to Jeff King at pkskischool@gmail.com.
