The Older Persons’ Commission (OPC) has a new tool to help them deliver meals to homebound seniors.
Thanks to a generous $20,000 donation from 100 Women Who Care – Greater Rochester Area, the OPC was able to purchase a new ‘hotshot’ vehicle, used to transport Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors throughout northeast Oakland County.
The specialized food delivery vehicle carries 300 meals at a time and features heated and refrigerated compartments, which maintain the temperature of both hot and cold foods in any type of weather conditions. The OPC prepares and delivers over 330 meals each day to seniors living in Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Auburn Hills, Addison, Brandon, Independence Township, Lake Orion, and Oxford. Travelling approximately 200 miles per week, the new hot shot vehicle is integral to OPC’s ability to serve vulnerable seniors relying on Meals on Wheels for daily hot, nutritious meals.
100 Women Who Care of Greater Rochester is made up of local women interested in supporting their community by pooling their resources for maximum philanthropic impact on local charities. Each member of the group has the opportunity to present a charity of their choice, and recommend it as the recipient of their communal donation at the group’s quarterly meetings. Cathy Donahoe eloquently and successfully pitched OPC’s Meals on Wheels, citing the program’s tremendous impact on local seniors, and the group’s communal donation was then designated to the service.
Such a significant gift allowed the OPC to finalize the purchase of the much-needed vehicle to help meet the growing demand for home-delivered meals for vulnerable seniors. The daily hot meals and wellness checks provided by the service allow seniors to safely age in place, encouraging independence for those who wish to remain in their homes for as long as safely possible.
The OPC is extremely grateful to 100 Women Who Care – Greater Rochester Area for their investment in Meals on Wheels, and in the seniors who rely on this essential service. For information on Meals on Wheels, call 248-608-0264. The OPC is located at 650 Letica Dr., Rochester.
