A Sleepless, Triumphant, Bittersweet Week for the Falcon Marching Band

Last week, the Rochester Falcon Marching Band (FMB) performed four times in five days, capping off an exciting marching season.

At the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA) District XVI Marching Band Festival, the FMB, under the direction of Mr. David A. Uhrig, received straight 1’s (the highest score possible) in all three categories of music, marching and general effect showmanship. For the third year in a row, the band marched a flawless show in the pouring rain.

On Friday, the band entertained the crowd at the Rochester High School (RHS) Homecoming pep-rally. Friday evening was Rochester’s homecoming football game, and would be the last time the band would perform its 2017 show, The Music of the Five Senses. Friday was also the last time the seniors would perform on the field. Several seniors had older siblings who had been in band as well, so their families were marking the end of an era. In a testament to the tradition that is the Falcon Marching Band, over 40 alumni members of the band were on hand to march into the Rochester stadium and play The Fight Song, Alma Mater, and Star-Spangled Banner alongside current band members.

Sunday, the Falcon Marching Band played a Command Performance. This annual fund-raiser supports band programs throughout the year. The winner is determined by a lottery, and this year, the Williamson family had the winning ticket. Though it was a blustery day on Sunday, the weather cleared in time for the band to march through the Williamson’s neighborhood and give a concert at their home.

The Falcon Marching Band will play at the Rochester High School Collage Concert next Wednesday. On December 2, the entire band will travel to Sarnia, Ontario, to play in the Sarnia Parade of Lights. The following day, they will march in the annual Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade.

The Falcon Marching Band is grateful to the community of Rochester for all its support and they hope to see you at the parade.
