On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, Royal Park Hotel located in Downtown Rochester, Michigan will host an Active Shooter Awareness Discussion featuring Oakland County Sheriff, Mike Bouchard. This one of a kind and complimentary awareness event is open to the community, local businesses, hospitals, schools and universities, media and the general public. Also contributing to the discussion is Steve Schettenhelm, Rochester Chief of Police and John Cieslik, Rochester Fire Chief.
An “active shooter” is an individual who is engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve very quickly. “Knowledge and advance preparation is power”, said Sheriff Michael Bouchard. “Please know we are working every day to be better prepared to prevent and if necessary, respond to and engage any threat to our community.”
Understandably, this is a sensitive topic. No single answer exists for what to do, but a survival mindset can increase the odds of saving lives and keeping our community safe. When faced with a situation involving an active shooter one must consider the following three options: Run, Hide, and Fight.
Join the discussion with our community leaders at 4pm on January 27th and learn how to recognize the signs, react and respond, create an evacuation plan and take action!
