District-wide Open House morphs into celebration of “All Things Avondale”
Nobody is surprised to discover that the Avondale School District Open House scheduled for April 20 has morphed from a typical evening of parents picking up information from vendor-like table to a celebration of all things Avondale. “We knew when we began planning the event that is was going to be more than people stopping by to collect brochures,” said Avondale School District Superintendent Dr. James Schwarz. “We knew we wanted the open house to mirror what goes on in the classroom – personal interaction, hands-on activities, student engagement, a celebration of learning and all things Avondale.”
One of the groups showcased during the Open House will be members of the Avondale Middle School robotics team
The Open House takes place at Avondale High School where staff, parents and community members will come together to showcase every school and program in the District from Pre-Kindergarten through post-high. Highlights will include demonstrations and participatory activities focused on STEM opportunities in and out of the classroom, performances by the Avondale Middle School and Avondale High School bands and choirs, performance by elementary music classes, real-time theatre production class, hands-on activities in the visual arts wing and in the field house, information about curriculum and innovative advanced teaching practices and much more. Guests will also have opportunity to meet and talk to teachers, coaches, counselors, and administrators and there will be a parents-to-parents panel discussion in the Media Center throughout the evening.
Schwarz, who has been with the District since 2014, is looking forward to the event citing it as a chance for the District to showcase its many points of pride. “When I first came to Avondale people kept saying: Avondale is Oakland County’s best kept secret and I couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to keep the great things that go on here a secret. We have great teachers doing great things and we’re not going to keep that a secret anymore.”
