Amelia Island at 8 MPH

Have you ever been on a Segway? Do you know what a Segway is? A trip to Amelia Island Plantation is one of those destinations where visitors can try one. The Plantation is “Florida’s premier island resort.” It is located off the state’s northeast coast and should be a consideration when planning your winter vacation.

You have most likely seen a Segway on television. They are those funny-looking transportation devices that policemen in big cities use. You may also have seen a security guard in a large shopping mall zooming by on one. The rider stands on a small platform about a foot off the ground. There are two wheels, one on each side of the base, and a handlebar-like controller that comes up to waist level.

It only takes a few minutes to learn how to operate the “human transporter.” Segway has a few models and they are a blast to ride on. At 8 MPH, you may tour different parts of the island. All tours are guided and offer photo stops along the way. Since they are battery operated, they are quiet with just a low hum. This allows you to come close to wildlife on the island. You might get to see a red-shouldered hawk, or with really good luck, you may see a bobcat! Many of the trails are along the coast, offering whiffs of salt water and the echo of crashing waves.

A service of the resort, Amelia’s Wheels, will set you up for your Segway tour. To enhance your travels around the grounds, you may also rent bicycles, Island Hoppers (motorized golf carts), baby joggers and baby trailers. There are seven miles of bike trails offering gorgeous scenery for whatever transportation method you choose. Many folks just enjoy an early morning walk to start each day.

The resort has top-notch championship golf courses and 23 tennis courts. Racquet Park has been home to several women’s championship events for over 30 years and many of the great names in tennis have played here. They offer professional instruction for both golf and tennis if you need to brush up on your skills.

Amelia Island Plantation has everything you need. They offer fun retail shopping, a variety of dining options, and spa services. While Segway tours are becoming more popular, there are only a few places around the country that offer them. With all the beauty this island offers, a Segway tour is a must do while visiting Amelia Island. Perfect for couples and families, the resort has many packages to accommodate most budgets.
