In a press release from Crittenton Home Care, it was announced that they are partnering with American House Senior Living Communities to celebrate Memorial Day early, with a patriotic ceremony on May 21 at American House Elmwood at 2251 W. Auburn Road, in Rochester Hills.
The celebration, held the Wednesday before Memorial Day, begins at 1 p.m. with opening remarks from Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, with reflections on Memorial Day. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 154 President Brian Bobek will lead the event as master of ceremonies.
The Detroit Arsenal of Democracy Museum, Rochester Hills Museum and Chapter 154 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will showcase visual representations of veteran stories. Authentic memorabilia will be on-site to view including vehicles, armor and equipment used by soldiers. The Rochester Hills Museum exhibit of local veterans will be on display May 19 to May 23.
Next, the Color Guard of Chapter 154 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, escorted by Avondale Middle School students, will present the flags of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard, followed by the “Star-Spangled Banner” and The Pledge of Allegiance.
Immediately following, there will be a performance from the Avondale Middle School Choir. The chorus, made up of eighth grade students, will sing patriotic staples in honor of the holiday.
Following the choir performance, five unique generations of local veterans will speak to their own experiences, including: a World War II veteran of the Air Force; a Vietnam veteran of the Army; a Gulf War veteran of the Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy; a veteran of the Marine Corps; and a Global War on Terrorism veteran of the Air Force.
The event will conclude with an educational flag folding ceremony by Chapter 154 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, a pinning of veterans in attendance and another performance by Avondale Middle School Choir.
“American House has always felt a deep respect and gratitude for the men and women of the armed forces,” explained Rob Gillette, chief operating officer of American House. “We want to take every opportunity to thank both the senior citizens of American House and the surrounding communities of veterans throughout the area.”
The partnership between Crittenton Home Care and American House began on Veteran’s Day in 2011, and has grown into community-building experiences centered on highlighting local veterans.
“Honoring those in our community who have served our country is a privilege,” said Andrea Walker, Crittenton Home Care. “We encourage everyone to join us in celebrating patriotism by being part of this event, honoring local veterans and educating our community on those who have served for our freedom.”
There will be a light reception immediately following the celebration. The event will be free and open to the community. Space is limited. Please RSVP by contacting American House Elmwood at 248-852-1980.
