Authors in April Receives 2019 State Literacy Award

The Rochester Hills Public Library and Rochester Community Schools’ program Authors in April received the 2019 State Literacy Award through the Library of Michigan, the Michigan Center for the Book, and the Library of Congress. The award includes a $2,225 grant made possible through the David M. Rubenstein foundation.

Authors in April Receives 2019 State Literacy Award

The State Literacy Award “recognizes organizations or programs that have made outstanding and innovative contributions to promoting literacy and/or reading in the local community or state” according to the Library of Congress. The Rochester Hills Public Library nominated the program Authors in April for consideration in December 2018.

“It is a honor to have Authors in April recognized for making a difference in our community,” said Library Director Christine Lind Hage, “This award reinforces the good work that is being done through the program, and empowers us to reinvest in our community.”

Unique to Rochester, Authors in April is a non-profit group that offers children and parents the opportunity to spend time with renowned authors. Authors in April is dedicated to bringing children, authors, and illustrators together through the magic of books by providing children the opportunity to meet with and speak to a variety of children’s and young adult authors each year.

“I’m proud to see Authors in April recognized in this way. The program goes beyond promoting a love for reading by introducing children to the idea that writing and illustrating is a viable career path that they could pursue. You don’t always know what’s possible until you see it, and that’s what Authors in April does,” said Youth Services Manager Betsy Raczkowski.
