Area families are invited to Avondale High School for the Avondale Schools District-wide Open House to learn about the many learning opportunities – in and out of the classroom and for students preschool-age to post high school – available to Avondale students. A school district that serves students from Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills, Troy, and Bloomfield Township, Avondale is an intimate learning community that celebrates a rich diversity of learners and offers programming as diverse as the interests and strengths of the student body. Authentic and relevant learning will be on display during the Open House as the district-wide focus on Project Based Learning and Design Thinking is highlighted. Also showcased will be the District’s many offerings for STEM-based learning including hands-on activities and demonstrations presented by the district’s elementary through high school robotics program and the middle and high school science and technology departments.
Performances by Avondale elementary school music classes and middle and high school vocal music performing groups will take place at various locations around the building as well as performances by district instrumental groups. In the Avondale Performing Arts Centre, guests can observe students preparing for the Avondale Theatre Company’s upcoming production of Seussical the Musical featuring a cast of elementary through high school students. In the Visual Arts wing, National Art Honor Society students will be on hand to engage visitors in a special Art project and down the hall, guests can drop in on WAHS 89.5 – Avondale High School’s award-winning student-run radio station.
At the other end of the building, in the Avondale High School Field House, athletics takes center stage as coaches line the upper bowl to field questions from parents about the spectrum of individual and team sports offered by the district. In the lower bowl, fifth-graders from the All-Avondale Basketball League will have their moment in the “Big House” in front of their fan base of parents, grandparents, fellow students, and teachers.
Throughout the evening and all around the building, parents can learn about every area of curriculum from Art to foreign language to CTE and from Kindergarten through high school core content areas. New programming will also be presented including the Avondale Gifted and Talented classroom for 3rd and 4th graders, Project Lead the Way STEM curriculum at the middle and high schools, the Baker College/Avondale Early College Program, the MEEMIC Risk Management and Insurance Certification Program, and new programming for Avondale’s alternative high school, the Avondale Academy. In addition, families can learn about the many opportunities for Avondale students and staff made possible through the Avondale/Oakland University Partnership as well as other partnerships including Avondale Youth Assistance and a host of community organizations positioned to support our students with educational, social and emotional development. Avondale Early Learning Centers and Busy Bees staffs will also be on hand to answer questions and provide program information.
Rounding out the experience will be opportunity to meet staff and administrators from every school in the district as well as students and parents – all part of the intimate learning community of Avondale.
