Pending approval at its regular Board meeting this Thursday, Feb. 25, the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects to close Big Beaver Road between Woodward Ave. (M-1) and Adams Road in Bloomfield Township and Birmingham as soon as March 1 for permitted utility relocation work.
However, it’s not certain when the road will close, as Consumer’s Energy continues to wait for a permit from the Grand Truck Western railroad, whose track crosses this section of Big Beaver. If the permit is issued shortly, the road could close Tuesday, March 1. Otherwise it could be delayed.

The utility relocation work, expected to take through approximately May 31, is being done in preparation for RCOC’s reconstruction of the road, which will start following the utility work and also require the closure of the road.
Business access within the construction zone will be maintained throughout the road closure. The detour for through traffic will be Woodward Avenue to Long Lake Road to Adams Road and back to Big Beaver and vice versa.
“We are very sensitive to the closing of this heavily used roadway and the inconvenience it may cause to many motorists,” Stated Road Commission Member Greg Jamian. “But,” Jamian added, “This work was necessitated by the deteriorated condition of the existing road and the bridge over the Rouge River.”
Also closed to through traffic during the work will be Ivy Street just north of Big Beaver between Kensington and Adams roads.
