The annual series, named in honor of Oakland’s first chancellor, Durward “Woody” Varner, aims to energize and sustain the highest academic and scholarly aspirations of the university community.

“We are delighted to have science educator Bill Nye as our Varner Vitality lecturer here at Oakland University,” said Dr. James Lentini, senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost. “Bill has inspired many people of all ages to explore science and to think critically about the world around us. His own work as an inventor and scientist adds to the perspective he brings.”

Nye’s extensive body of work includes raising awareness about climate change, discoveries in evolution and raising the standard of living for women and girls across the globe.

In 2010, Nye was elected the American Humanist Association’s Humanist of the Year, and in 2012 was honored by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers with the Ralph Coates Roe Medal. He holds Honorary Doctorate degrees from six universities, is the CEO of the Planetary Society and hopes to inspire people everywhere to change the world.
