One of the families participating in the event is Unjanai Thomas of Redford, a single mother of three young children, including one-year-old twins. Thomas was diagnosed with stage IV colon cancer in February and was forced to leave her job due to her treatment and its side effects. As a result, she was behind in rent and utilities. Having since moved in with her parents, New Day is now helping her with the basic necessities of food and clothing for her children, car maintenance and gas costs to get to treatment and more.

New Day Foundation for Families is a Rochester Hills, Michigan, nonprofit dedicated to alleviating the financial and emotional burden of cancer. Through its network of social workers at nearly 50 hospitals across the state, New Day helps families overcome financial barriers to treatment and healing. New Day is often the first light of hope for a family facing cancer.
