Art of Christmas
Wednesday, December 8, 7 PM
Rochester Hills Public Library, 500 Olde Towne, Rochester
The story of Christmas through the art of the masters is both familiar and surprising. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century, the Catholic Church commissioned paintings and sculptures which, because their enormous membership could neither read nor write, was how their message was taught. Through visual images Beverly Smith will tell the story of Christmas from the Annunciations to Anna, Elizabeth and Mary to the safe return of Jesus and his family from Egypt. Beverly Hall Smith, Assistant Professor of Art History at Marygrove College, the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University, will present this program.
