Crittenton Hospital
The Crittenton Hospital Medical Center Board of Trustees selected Ascension Health Michigan to be the new owner of the hospital pending a six-month due diligence and strategic planning process to work out the details of the transaction. A letter of intent was signed on December 31, 2014.
Crittenton Hospital Opened in 1967
“We conducted a very thorough vetting process and determined that as part of Ascension Michigan, Crittenton has the opportunity to continue as a thriving community asset well into the future,” said Crittenton Board Chair Robert Lenihan. Over five local and national organizations made offers to purchase Crittenton Hospital, the last significant nonprofit independent hospital in the southeast area of the state.
Crittenton Hospital Medical Center is a 290-bed acute health care facility serving communities in Oakland, Macomb and Lapeer counties. Crittenton provides a campus for residents from Wayne State University’s School of Medicine who are specializing in Family Medicine. Crittenton is also a teaching campus for nurses from Oakland University’s School of Nursing in Rochester.
Ascension Health in Michigan
Ascension Health has locations across Michigan, including St. John Providence Health System in southeast Michigan, Borgess Health in Kalamazoo, Genesys in Grand Blanc, St. Mary’s of Michigan in Saginaw and St. Joseph Health System in Tawas. Crittenton’s location in Rochester is approximately halfway between the service areas of Genesys and St. John Providence.
Crittenton Hospital to Join Ascension Health Michigan
“With our new partner, plans will begin to immediately strengthen several clinical services and build program volume. Crittenton will be a complement to the strategic strength of Ascension Health Michigan and remain committed to its lowest cost, highest quality position as well as its strategies that recognize the importance of primary care physicians. The financial and operating strength of the health system will dramatically improve the financial and operating foundation of Crittenton and continue its upward trend of financial stability,” said Crittenton President and CEO Roy Powell.
Crittenton would add a strong Northern Oakland County presence to Ascension Health’s statewide service area. The Together Health Network was formed a few months ago between Trinity Health and Ascension Health.
“The addition of Crittenton to the Ascension Michigan family is a great fit for both organizations,” said Gwen MacKenzie, Sr. Vice President, Ascension Health, and Market leader of the Michigan ministries. “This move was a very high priority for our national Ascension Health strategy to provide person-centered care through regional clinically integrated systems of care,” said MacKenzie.
The Ascension Organization

Ascension pays special attention to those who are poor and vulnerable. Last year Ascension provided $1.8 billion in care of persons living in poverty and other community benefit programs.
One-hundred thirty-one Ascension hospitals and more than 30 senior care facilities are in 23 states and the District of Columbia. In addition to healthcare delivery, Ascension subsidiaries provide a variety of services and solutions.
Doctors, nurses and employees, as well as, contractors and customers have many more questions. Brian Birney in the communications office at Crittenton told Rochester Media that it will be after the “six-month due diligence until we know more,” said Birney.
