Heroine overcomes obstacles to fight a villainous trio
Audiences will delight to the mounting suspense of a classic thriller as Avon Players presents Wait Until Dark running March 8-23, 2019.
Susy Hendrix (Marie Burchi) is a recently blinded Greenwich Village housewife who becomes the target of three con artists searching for doll which hides a valuable cache of drugs. Susy’s husband, Sam (Nicholas Frederick), unwittingly transported the doll from Canada as a favor to a woman who has since been murdered. The con men are led by a brutal career criminal who calls himself “Roat” (Steve Grady). Roat engages two small time thugs to pose, respectively, as police detective “Sergeant Carlino” (Kyle Kiesler) and “Mike” (Chris Polhill), an alleged friend of Susy’s husband from out of town. Susy must use her wits to save herself and her husband from these murderous criminals with the help of her young neighbor, Gloria (Sienna Berkseth).
Written by playwright Frederick Knott (also known for Dial M for Murder, presented by Avon Players last season), Wait Until Dark premiered on Broadway in 1966 and starred Lee Remick as Susy and Robert Duvall as Roat. In 1967, the indelible film adaptation starring Audrey Hepburn as Susy and Alan Arkin as Roat was released. The film appears on the AFI’s “100 Years…100 Thrills” list and its climax is ranked tenth on Bravo’s “100 Scariest Movie Moments.” A 1998 Broadway revival starred Marissa Tomei as Susy and Quentin Tarantino as Roat.
