Dawn of the Dogman is a Free Movie Event in Downtown Rochester

Dogman Film Frenzy Kick-Off Event Presents Locally Filmed Movie, The Pickle Recipe

Dogman Film Frenzy invites guests to grab a favorite camp chair and make a night of it at its inaugural event, Dawn of the Dogman, in downtown Rochester on Saturday, September 30. Dawn of the Dogman is this year’s kick-off event for next year’s Dogman Film Frenzy 2018 film festival. This event promises to delight movie fans with a free outdoor viewing of Detroit’s own crowd-pleasing The Pickle Recipe and a Q&A with film director and Rochester-area resident Michael Manasseri. This exciting outdoor BYOC (bring your own chair) event begins at 6:30 p.m., with the free movie showing at dusk (around 7:30 p.m.). On hand to entertain attendees will be live music, food and concessions for purchase from local food trucks/vendors, movie-related activities, a local Dogman-legend expert, and more information about Dogman Film Frenzy’s 2018 film festival plans. Located right in downtown Rochester, where Diversion Street turns into South Street, Dawn of the Dogman will be taking over the parking lot next door to Du-All Contracting, Inc., for the evening, offering the perfect surrounds for such an event.

The Pickle Recipe, a Detroit-area-filmed 2016 comedy, tells of Joey, a down-on-his-luck party emcee, desperate for cash, who is corrupted by his shameless uncle to steal his grandmother’s top-secret pickle recipe. Starring such notable actors as Jon Dore, Lynn Cohen, and Academy Award® Nominee David Paymer, audiences will laugh at the PG-13 comedic situations and antics of the movie, as well as recognize Detroit-area locales featured throughout the film. As an additional treat, director Michael Manasseri will be attending to give an audience Q&A session and share a few movie-filming stories.

Program Director Lisa Alfelt says, “I’m so excited about our kick-off Dawn of the Dogman event. To be showing The Pickle Recipe as our debut movie is perfect. Dogman Film Frenzy not only promotes movies that deserve to be seen by larger audiences, but we also want to support good local filmmaking whenever possible. Here’s a movie that fits both goals. And to have the support of the Rochester community makes it that much better. What better way to spend a weekend fall night than sitting outside downtown Rochester watching a terrific movie, having dinner right there from local food trucks, listening to good live music, and participating in fun movie activities? I really can’t think of anything.”

Rochester nonprofit group Dogman Film Frenzy has a passion for movies as a form of entertainment, education, and culture. Its mission is to not only bring movies to Rochester and its environs, but to draw back the curtains behind the movies with enlightening discussions, invigorating guest speakers, zany activities, and valuable information. The group’s moniker is a tribute to the local Dogman legend–elusive and not spotted by everyone–similar to the movies it plans to explore and highlight. Many movies, throughout all genres, do not have the viewing audience they deserve but definitely have merit and are worth watching.

The latter part of 2018 will bring a film festival to downtown Rochester, penned after the group’s name: Dogman Film Frenzy. To aid in building a movie community prior to the festival, the group plans on offering a monthly activity for movie fans, whether it be a group movie meet-up at a Metro Detroit movie theater with discussion and food following or another movie presentation by Dogman Film Frenzy.
