Dear Crabby,
One of the TV shows I was really excited for this fall was the rebooted The Muppets. I’ve watched a couple of episodes and I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed. What do you think?
Thanks, Suzy Marionette
Dear Suzy Marionette,
Well, you’re certainly not alone in your disappointment. Before the show even aired, advocacy group One Million Moms was already calling for its removal from the ABC lineup. They say it’s ‘perverted’ and not family-friendly. Interestingly they made their claims before the first episode even aired. Maybe they were able to get their hands on an advance copy of the show? Or maybe they were just making assumptions about the content based on things like an ad showing Kermit the Frog (with no pants on) and copy that reads, “Finally. A network TV show with full frontal nudity.” While I certainly don’t think anything unsavory belongs in the family hour timeslot, I have to question that particular example. They do know the frog has never worn pants, right? Or really any clothes for that matter, so it seems rather silly to get uptight about it now. I think they just don’t like the fact the show isn’t exactly like it was in the 70s, which is what caused me to tune out.
I guess I’m not hip enough to get the ‘mockumentary’ style in which the new show is shot. Personally, I miss the song and dance numbers with the guest stars – especially the theme song. It’s a real toe-tapper. But what I really missed were Statler and Waldorf; you know those two distinguished older gentlemen who sat in the balcony and dispensed timely wisdom throughout the show. They’re still around, just not as much as I’d like. Will I probably watch this new, fandangled version of The Muppets? Eh, probably not. But that has less to do with any so-called controversy and more with I just don’t care. Thanks to cable, I can binge watch Bonanza.
Hope that answers your question.
Sincerely, Dear Crabby
