Dear Crabby, How Can I Get Out of Ice Fishing?

Dear Crabby,

My boyfriend thinks ice fishing is the best thing ever. But, I hate it! The problem is if I don’t go ice fishing with him, I barely see him all winter. Help!

Sincerely,
Freezing Fran

Dear Fran,

I am probably the worst person to consult with on both of these topics, but I will give it a whirl here. As far as the ice fishing goes, I think the two worst ways possible to spend any amount of free time would be freezing to death or fishing! So by combining the two, you just completed my worst nightmare! Why any sane human being would sit out on the ice with a short little pole leading to a hole in the ice (which I typically stay away from) and wait for hours for a half frozen fish to bite, is beyond me! I think the brain begins to freeze and all ability to use logic and reason stop with it. But that’s just my open-minded opinion on that topic. As for not being sure if this guy will spend time with you any other way or not, I would like to tell you a story. I was told by a wise old person that “If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it is yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be!” I first put this into practice with my little pet butterfly that I had caught when I was just 7 years old! He was bright and colorful and I had named him “Rainbow.” I loved him so much, and he brought me so much joy as I studied his wings and watched him through the upside down plastic cup I had him in. I knew I could not keep him forever.  I thought about that wise old saying and let my new friend go. He flew away and I never saw him again. I was crushed and ended up crying for quite a while. As a matter of fact I still get a little misty just thinking about that day. So, I guess I would tell you that if you like this guy you should figure out how to like ice fishing. Or if you are brave enough to lose him, see if you are more important than his frozen pastime. I like to think that things happen for a reason and that eventually everything will all make sense, but then I watched our Congress discuss something and it blew that theory!  Anyway, I wish you the best and hope that you can find a creative way to get out of freezing this winter! Let me know.

Sincerely, Dear Crabby
