Dear Crabby,
I recently learned Detroit has a professional soccer team. It is called the Detroit City Football Club. Just as I was digesting that info I learned women’s soccer is coming to Detroit in 2020. I know years ago Detroit had a WNBA team, so do you think a women’s soccer team will work?
Thanks!
Alexi Futbol,
Dear Alexi Futbol,
Oh, boy. Here we go again. Back in July, I was asked what I thought about women’s soccer in general. Let’s just say not everyone appreciated my point-of-view on the subject. Well, except maybe for Bob Lytle of Lytle Pharmacy who apparently found that particular post to be funny, which just goes to show you I’m more than just a pretty face. As I mentioned in that post, I don’t really watch soccer – men or women – I had to do some investigating into what you were asking.
From what I’ve been told, the fans of the men’s team are very passionate about the game. I’m talking smoke bombs, big drums, and pretty much non-stop chanting throughout the game. These are clearly people who care about soccer, football, whatever you want to call it. So, I guess it stands to reason if there is this much hullabaloo for the men’s game, people would probably get all excited about adding a women’s team to the mix. What the women are going to play is something called the United Women’s Soccer (UWS) in the spring of 2020; and like the fellas, they will play their home games at Hamtramck’s Keyworth Stadium. Here’s the thing, even though I don’t care about women’s soccer doesn’t mean I hate women’s sports.
You mentioned the time Detroit had a WNBA team. In the 11 seasons the Shock played in Detroit, they managed to win four conference titles and three championships! That’s not too shabby if you ask me. And I have to believe that having a professional women’s basketball team in the area probably gave a lot of young girls something to look up to. So, if you like soccer, GO SUPPORT THE TEAM. If you want your daughters, granddaughters, nieces, or cousin-twice removed to see what women can do or why they should be paid the same as the men, GO SUPPORT THE TEAM! Because at the end of the day it doesn’t matter what I say. If there aren’t actually butts in the seats then Detroit won’t have a team for long. And why not give this new women’s football team a chance? We’ve been giving Detroit’s other football team a chance since 1930 and look where that’s got us. Honestly, at this point, I’d just like to be able to cheer for a team that’s winning. Wouldn’t you?
I hope that answers your question!
