Dear Crabby, Is This Weekend’s Snow Storm a Big Deal?

Dear Crabby, I’ve Heard on the News that this is our First Big Snow Storm of the Season, didn’t we have that in November. Is this Weekend’s Snow Storm a Big Deal?

Sincerely, Normal for January

Dear Normal for January,

Well there goes the weather reporter again, trying to fool us. Yes, we had nearly a foot of snow in these parts back on November 11. But that was technically still “Fall” and not yet “Winter,” so I guess it is this season’s first. And, that was way back in 2019 … we’re in 2020 now and everything is news again.

It’s just the way the news, and especially the weather people like to report things. This weekend’s snowfall is quite normal for January. We’ve seen above average temperatures this winter after several years of polar vortexes. Not too many people are complaining about that. However, we are a four-season state and our Michigan economy depends on tourism all year long. So, if you’re a skier or snowboarder, or if you like to ice fish or snowmobile, this winter is not your winter. Now, all the ski resorts in the area, like Pine Knob and Mt. Holly, have been making snow every chance they get and you’ll find good skiing, locally, if you that’s your thing. Other outdoor winter enthusiasts will need to travel north to find ice covered lakes and heaps of snow.

Check out the Downtown Rochester’s Fire & Ice Festival for a fun winter experience close to home. I’ll stay indoors and sneak a few too many marshmallows for my hot cocoa when Mrs. Crabby isn’t looking. Hopefully, this snow will stick around for the kids to build snowmen, go sledding, and maybe have a good old-fashioned snowball fight.

So be safe, but you’re right, it’s not a big deal, it’s January in Michigan.

Sincerely, Dear Crabby
