Dear Crabby, Should Michigan Move to Central Time?

Dear Crabby, I hear some our state politicians want to move Michigan to the Central Time Zone, should we do that?

Sincerely, Not on my Watch

Well, Not on my Watch, sounds like you don’t like that idea – me either.

I believe, Michigan has been in the Eastern Time Zone since we first started using time zones in America. I like being in the first zone in the United States – same time as New York City – it keeps us one foot in New England and one foot in the Midwest (that’s how I see it anyway).

These politicians, whoever they may be, why would that want that? I guess there are some benefits, such as the news would be on an hour earlier, as well as many of your favorite TV shows. It would also be lighter, earlier in the morning. And we’d be on the same time as Chicago.

Dear Crabby with a Laptop ComputerThe downside of moving to the Central Zone (I’m glad you asked) it would get darker, sooner in the evening; and we’d lose that connection to New York, Miami, DC, Atlanta, and many more who we share that Eastern Time Zone with.

Funny thing about Time Zones, many states have a split between two zones. Even here in Michigan, the counties boarding Wisconsin in the Upper Peninsula are on Central Time now. Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Florida all have parts in both the Eastern and Central zones.

I don’t like the idea of moving to another time zone, I have enough trouble moving between Standard Time and Daylight Savings Time. Mrs. Crabby always gives me the task of changing the clocks twice per year. She heads off to bed and I roam the house changing all the clocks – “why do we have so many?” – I crab from room to room as I move through house. Finally, when I go to bed, she asks why I crabbed the whole time. And I always make the joke, “took me over an hour.” She laughs and I say, “Spring Forward” to add a punch line to the joke. Then I tell her I’ll make up for it in Fall. I tell her I’ll get all the clocks changed before I get started, and then she adds the punch line, “Fall Back.” It’s moments like these that remind me why I love this woman – she puts up with that same joke twice a year, year after year, from me.

Anyhow, I’m with you Not on my Watch, let’s stay on Eastern Time.

Until Next Time,

Dear Crabby
