Dear Crabby, I Feel Powerless When The Power Goes Out!

Dear Crabby,

We tend to lose power frequently around our neighborhood. I feel so powerless when this happens! What do you suggest we do during those times?

Sincerely,  Dave D’prest

Dear Mr. D’prest,

I too live in a neighborhood that is notorious for losing power. It is a pet peeve of mine, and it still frustrates me to this day. There are times when the weather is bad and I could understand losing power – you know, during ice storms or downpours. But sometimes we even lose power on sunny days or with the slightest breeze.  This exasperates me!

Over the years, in an effort to quell my irritable impatience, I have asked many others what they do when the power goes out. One guy told me that’s why he ended up with so many children; he obviously didn’t share my crabby disposition. A girl said she likes to get a candle and curl up with a good book, but I knew that wouldn’t work for me. I usually fall asleep reading, so with a candle and a good book, I’d end up starting one huge bonfire. Another guy told me to get a huge generator and be ready to hook it up whenever we lose power. Unfortunately, I am lazy and cheap – a combination that would never allow me to follow that advice either. However, it didn’t take too long for me to find a pastime that I did enjoy with the power out – indulging my mischievous nature. I would casually walk around to neighbors’ houses that had generators and sneak up and turn them off. Then I would hide and watch them come out to restart them. I’d wait about two minutes, then go shut them off again. Watching them get all frustrated and then start fighting with their spouses would just entertain me till no end. I finally picked up a generator myself for almost nothing – bought it from a neighbor at a garage sale. He said it wasn’t trustworthy – strangely enough, it works fine for me. I know I should come clean someday, but I’m hoping I have a few more years to think about it first. So, use the power that you do have – your brain – and come up with a pastime that suits you for those times of powerlessness. Good luck, and let me know if you think of something especially fun and entertaining!

Sincerely, Dear Crabby
