Dear Crabby, What do you Think about Women’s Soccer?
Curious Cat
Dear Curious,
I don’t. I mean I try not too. For two reasons. One, it’s soccer, and two, it’s women playing soccer. We didn’t have soccer when I was in school – we played real sports – football, baseball, basketball. However, most of my grandchildren play soccer – it’s great for them – all that running, back-and-forth, and running, and more running … it really wears them out. But why watch it?
I get it. Most of the world plays soccer and they call it football – it’s not football – it’s soccer. And they’re passionate about it. Low scores or no scores and all that running. Who’s off sides and who’s on sides … who knows … who cares. I love the grandkids getting fresh air, getting tons of exercise, and learning to work as a team. But I never pay attention to who wins – it doesn’t matter.
I’m sure this question comes from the fact that the U.S. team just won the World Cup for women’s soccer, and that’s great, good for them. It only comes around every four years – it might take that much time to build up an audience again (I mean, who would be interested if it were next year again?). These are all athletic, hard-working young women that enjoy running. After all, they need something to do before they find a husband and have children – well, most of them anyway – and the ones who don’t might just as well be big mouths, who become activists for their next career.
There is some controversy about being paid as much as the men’s team, but here’s a few things to think about. One, not all the men on the men’s team make the same; Two, the men get paid with mostly bonuses and the women get more of a salary base; Three, maybe the women should try out for the men’s team then. Overall, yes, the men make signigantly more per game, per season, and per championship game. Not fair is one way to look at it. However, the men’s sport of soccer is huge – consider all the sponsors, advertisements, and endorsements – it’s a much bigger deal and consequently, the men make more of that large industry. It’s like comparing a major league player’s salary to a minor leaguer in baseball – then say they should all make the same – the math doesn’t work.
The sports of the world have been dominated by men’s sports for so long that it will take a while to equalize it – give it time – we’re getting closer. We have some history to overcome, be patient, we’re moving in the right direction. That being said, they all get paid way too much … and it’s soccer … women’s soccer or men’s soccer – I don’t care to watch equally, either one.
I’ve got to go, baseball is on …
Sincerely, Dear Crabby
