Dear Crabby,
I’m a faithful reader of yours and seem to remember a couple months back you gave your thoughts on the Roseanne reboot. Now, I wonder what you think about the show being cancelled.
Thanks!

Dear L. Langford,
As my grandkids would say, “Well, that escalated quickly.” I believe in the post you’re referencing that I said Roseanne the actress and character reminded me a lot of Archie Bunker because she’s loud and speaks her mind. Apparently, this time she spoke a little too loudly. There’s no sense in repeating what she said because it’s been all over the media, but it did seem rather random and unnecessary. Back in my day, we lived in a diverse neighborhood and my dad made it very clear there were certain words we were to never use. I won’t tell you what he said he’d do to us if we ever did, but we all believed that he was a man who made good on his word. Now I know there are some out there who hated the show and even Roseanne Barr, and are thrilled both are gone.
Here’s the thing: this doesn’t just affect her. With just a dozen words, Roseanne squelched the livelihood of hundreds of people who worked on her show. People who don’t make multimillions. People with mortgages to pay off and whose kids need braces. In all the hullabaloo that has ensued since the tweet heard round the social media world, those are the people I’ve felt the sorriest for. As for all those people saying, “If Roseanne gets fired for this, then ABC should also cancel The View for all the hate they spew,” here’s another thing: life isn’t fair. Yep. That’s right. There’s a fine line between fair and reality and we’re gonna win some and we’re gonna lose some. This time it was Roseanne who came out on the losing end. But all is not lost. There’s already talk of bringing the show back with a different female lead, like Roseanne’s TV daughter Darlene (played by Sara Gilbert). She was always a smart aleck like Roseanne, so it could work. And besides, it’s happened before. Back in the 80’s actress Valerie Harper got in a dispute with the producer on her show, Valerie during the second season. Next thing you know they kicked her to the curb and the show kept going for another four seasons under Valerie’s Family and then The Hogan Family. I mean Dan came back from the dead for this reboot, so why not? It’s Hollyweird where anything can happen (and usually does).
Hope that answers your question and remember to tweet responsibly.
