Dear Crabby, What’s your Favorite Ice Cream Flavor?
Sincerely, Ben N. Jerry
Hello Mr. Jerry,
My all-time favorite flavor of ice cream is vanilla. That cool, milky dessert and I go way back. Although, I like most ice cream flavors—vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, butter pecan, cookie dough, mint chocolate chip, and even Superman—ice cream really goes with everything.
Did you know that Sunday is National Ice Cream Day?
July is National Ice Cream month—hot month, makes sense—President Reagan designated the month and made the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day. But long before that, when I was a just a boy, I worked at the local soda fountain as a soda jerk. I loved making all those combinations of soda, ice cream, and flavored syrup. Maybe that’s why vanilla is my favorite now—since I had so many over-the-top concoctions then—simple is just best. Being a soda jerk lasted only one summer, the fad was on its way out, just as I thought I had found my true calling.
Ice cream is a big, big deal here in America. I truly enjoy milkshakes, malts, sundaes, banana splits, and more. Dairy Queen Blizzards to Baskin-Robbins, Frozen yogurt to sorbet and Gelato—you can’t go wrong. Blessed with a good metabolism, I could indulge every day, but I don’t. It’s a treat and should be a small-portioned dessert or rare splurge—so I’m told. Americans love their ice cream, something like nine percent of all cow’s milk becomes ice cream—thank you Bessie.
“I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!”
Occasionally I still make treats for the family, the grand kids love anything with ice cream—Mrs. Crabby has shortened my title of soda jerk—she no longer uses the word soda.
Vanilla it is, most of the time. However, come July 19, I may have to celebrate will a giant Vernors & Vanilla ice cream soda with whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles and a big red cherry on top!
Enjoy National Ice Cream Day!
