Dear Crabby, Will there be any Award Shows to Watch in 2021?

Dear Crabby,

It seems like recently I heard something about nominations for some award show. With cinemas closed and that pesky pandemic still around, are award shows still a thing?

Thanks!

Dear Paula Presenter,

They sure are. And here’s the funniest part: there was an awards season last year too. If you missed it, don’t feel too bad. I think a lot of people did. Like you mentioned, something about a pandemic going on.

If you’re a longtime reader of my column you know my scope of knowledge when it comes to popular movies is mediocre at best. So, for me not having the usual Botox-filled pomp and circumstance with a side of amplified egos was no big loss. However, poor Mrs. Crabby was deeply traumatized. You know how sports fans get all riled up when they watch The Super Bowl or The Olympics? That’s Mrs. Crabby during award show season. Somehow, my sweet wife becomes a trash-talking, opinionated critic. It’s like she channels Joan Rivers!

Since no one remembers what it’s like to physically go to the movies anymore, I wondered if there are any films or actors to even nominate. My very own Siskel and Ebert (aka Mrs. Crabby) informed me the majority of the movies nominated were shown on different streaming services. Silly me. The ‘season’ kicks off this Sunday, February 28 with the 78th Golden Globes, which honor television and film. Apparently, under normal circumstances this dog-and-pony show would have already taken place in January, but you know, pandemic. The Hollywood Foreign Press people also had to ease up on some of the eligibility requirements so there would actually be people, movies, and shows to nominate. I read over the nomination list and the only name I recognized is The Crown. And that’s only because Mrs. Crabby loves watching it; just like she loves watching those darn Hallmark Christmas movies. The only thing I’m looking forward to watching is the hosts – Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who are back for the fourth time. They are firecrackers and pretty darn funny! I think they’re much better than that Ricky Gervais fella. But again because of the pandemic, Fey will be hosting on the east coast from the Rainbow Room in New York City and Poehler on the west coast from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. I’m not too sure how all that back-and-forth presenting and handing out awards is gonna work, but I bet it will feel like we’re watching a tennis match. So maybe I’ll just stick around for the opening banter between Fey and Poehler. Everything usually goes downhill from there.

Fingers crossed your favorite wins!
