Dennis White Adult Day Service Program at the OPC

Adult Day Services is a Lifesaver for Participants and their Caregivers

“Writing this brings joy to my heart: The professionals at the Older Persons Commission (OPC) Dennis White Adult Day Service Program (ADS) have provided the utmost respect and care to our family member, being very supportive and protective of his well-being, as if he were their own family. OPC’s staff have been so very reliable and accommodating – they have been a lifeline for our family.”

These inspiring words are from a loving family member of an OPC Adult Day Services (ADS) client. Her heartfelt words summarize the impact of this invaluable and perhaps little-known program. She makes clear what a vital resource ADS is for those living with dementia or other disability, as well as their caretakers.

Structured social activities and mental stimulation provide scientifically proven benefits to those who can function somewhat independently but are socially isolated, depressed or have confusion or memory loss. The ADS program at the OPC provides a full curriculum of activities. Each day is full of events designed to maintain and enhance physical, social, emotional and cognitive functioning. There are daily exercise, art and music programs, story-telling, current events, field trips, and more. Enriching respite care may even improve a person’s ability to live at home and remain independent for as long as possible.

For many, the days spent in ADS are the highlight of their week. Past ADS participant, Barbara, had vascular dementia and was living with her daughter and son-in-law. She would attend ADS 3 days per week, and loved it so much that she’d be up, dressed and waiting to go at 3:00 a.m. She didn’t want to miss a minute! ADS provided her family with peace of mind. Participants enjoy the socialization and have seen a decrease in depression and isolation by renewing old skills that can lead to an improved sense of self-worth. They are also able to make new friends and interact with others who may be experiencing the same feelings.

The security of a safe, consistent and compassionate environment available on a regular basis is an immense benefit not only for the participant, but for the caregiver as well. Caregiving is a full-time responsibility and can lead to stress, anxiety, depression and fatigue. Just as participants experience a sense of independence with the service, caregivers do as well: they have time to relax and rejuvenate, and accomplish tasks without being overwhelmed or concerned about providing care.

Before enrolling in the OPC ADS, a pre-screening is required. Services are offered Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Additional services include a hot lunch and refreshments twice each day. Transportation to ADS is available for those living in Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township. Call 248-608-0261 to arrange a visit.
