Discover How One Michigan Train Inspired a Holiday Classic

This holiday season, the Rochester Hills Library is proud to offer a festive and informative look at the holiday classic, The Polar Express. Also the name and inspiration of one of the libraries largest annual events, this month the library welcomes Dean Pyers with the Stream Railroading Institute of Owosso on Tuesday, December 4, to talk about how one Michigan train helped inspire the timeless Christmas story.

In his presentation Pyers will cover the history of the locomotive, a bit about the railroads in Michigan, the history of the group that now owns and operates the iconic 1225 locomotive and his own involvement with the Polar Express movie.

“This engine and the story behind it is a true gem in Michigan’s history and I’m thrilled to be able to share this story with people around the state,” said Pyers. “It becomes even more special around the holidays, knowing how many people grew up hearing and seeing the story of the Polar Express, and how that special holiday tale took root right here in Michigan.”

“The Polar Express is near and dear to our hearts here at the Rochester Hills Public Library,” said Community Relations Specialist Amanda Harrison Keighley. “We’re very excited to share more of its history here at the library as we gear up for the big night!”

The program is December 4 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room and is open to everyone with an RHPL library card. This program is geared toward adults but all ages are welcome. Please register in advance at rhpl.org.
