The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) reminds residents and business owners that it is illegal under Michigan law to shovel or plow snow or ice onto any road or highway, or to deposit snow on a road or road shoulder in such a way that it blocks motorists’ views of traffic.
Know where to Plow or Blow Snow
“Unfortunately, we have had problems in some areas lately, when business owners and residents have plowed their driveways or parking lots by pushing the snow out into the road,” explained RCOC Highway Maintenance Director Darryl Heid. “This creates a safety problem for motorists and creates additional work for the Road Commission, which, in some cases, has to re-plow the road. That can mean it will take us longer to get to other roads and into subdivisions.”
Pushing snow from a driveway or parking lot onto a road or depositing snow in a way that blocks a drivers’ “safety vision” is specifically prohibited in section 257.677(a) of the Michigan Vehicle Code. Doing so is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $100 and/or a jail sentence of up to 90 days.

And lets also remind residents to not snow blow or shovel their snow especially off of expanded driveways and parking areas on their property onto a neighbors property or throw it us against structures on property they do not own such as fences or into neighbors hedges or bushes, In addition in residential, keep the snow from mother nature in front of your property and don’t shovel it in front of your neighbors…happens all the time.

i was snow blowing the other day, first a driveway and then a sidewalk, 90 percent of the snow was hitting a barrier before it hit the road, and i stopped snow blowing anytime a car was coming past, in order to avoid any complaints. Now this is only the 2nd time i have snow blown, so I’m not sure if i was actually wrong. I ended up having an officer come to my home and take my name number and where i live, and said that what i did was not allowed. Now guaranteed he only gave me a warning and could tell that i was new to snow blowing.
My goal is just finding out if what i did was actually illegal, or if he was telling me not to do it because someone that didnt like it called and complained.
Make note it was currently snowing, and i was making sure that i was not obstructing anyones view from a vehicle nor running the snow blower when vehicles passed. Thoughts? Please get back to me/ cite me a better law that explains why what i did was illegal.
Perhaps you should contact the officer who came out to point you to the law/code that you were in violation of. And/or, contact the city for an ordinance representative to explain the law to you. Best of luck to you.
