A Door County Winter Wonderland
While I don’t want to rush wintertime to any of the Great Lakes states too soon, we have to recognize snow will be here before we can finish raking the leaves (at least that’s how it goes for me). We all know that here in Michigan winter can be fun all around the state. However, on the other side of Lake Michigan is the wonderfully charming peninsula of Door County, Wisconsin.
For the active person, I recommend snow shoeing at The Ridges Sanctuary or cross country skiing at Peninsula State Park. The crisp chill is refreshing as you hop or glide into the wilderness. You may want to jump on the back of a horse for a different perspective or on a snowmobile to cover more ground with less effort. Traveling at 80 MPH over a frozen lake is a rush!
Slowing it Down
Ice fishing is also available, I don’t really get standing over a hole in the ice, but many men love it. For couples and families, I suggest a sleigh ride and take the kids tubing or sledding. Entertaining and tasty fish boil dinners are available at several places on the peninsula; I had mine at the White Gull Inn. An authentic meal and a fun way to wind down your day of winter activities, I really enjoyed the local Lake Michigan whitefish boiled over an outdoor open fire. The steam and fire shoot up into the sky and the anticipation of eating fresh white fish makes you hungry for that first bite.
