A Beacon on Hope is the theme for this year’s annual district celebration which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, January 14, from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at the Rochester High School Auditorium, 180 S. Livernois Road. Scheduled attendees include City of Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett, City of Rochester Mayor Cathy Daldin, and Oakland Township Supervisor Terry Gonser.

“We are proud of how our children have welcomed the opportunity to actively engage in this year’s celebration honoring Rev. King. Through music, lyrics, and the arts, students can pay tribute to Rev. King’s message of non-violence and equality,” said Executive Director for Elementary Education Michael Behrmann.

The observance includes musical and dramatic performances, along with short essay and poetry presentations by RCS students. Another event highlight involves a student-recorded version of Reverend King’s “I have a dream” speech. The guest speaker for the evening is Lieutenant Colonel Rodney Crenshaw, U.S. Army, President of the African American Parent Network within the RCS district.

“In order for our students to persevere and positively impact the world, they need to learn about the events in history which led us to where we are today,” said Superintendent Robert Shaner, Ph.D. “Through programs such as our Martin Luther King, Jr., celebration, we can increase the relevance of the classroom instruction for our students.”

Reservations for the evening’s event are not required, but media is requested to contact the RCS Community Relations Director Lori Grein at lgrein@rochester.k12.mi.us or 248-726-3127 to make proper arrangements.
