Local Historian and Author Margaret Thalmann at the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library Annual Meeting

The Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library will hold their annual meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 22 in the library’s Multipurpose Room. After the meeting, Rochester Library patrons are welcome to attend the presentation by Margaret Thalmann, who will discuss her book, Petticoat Surgeon, about the extraordinary life of Bertha Van Hoosen.

Born in 1863, Bertha Van Hoosen was a pioneering female surgeon raised on a farm in Stoney Creek, MI and followed her calling in medicine to the University of Michigan. Bertha worked tirelessly for the advancement of women in medicine. In 1915, she became the founder and first president of the American Medical Women’s Association. Bertha’s life story includes many firsts, international recognition, an abiding love of family and a commitment to advance and improve the lives of women. Books will be available for purchase after the presentation.

Before Thalmann’s program, the Friends will hold their annual meeting which will include the presentation of their yearly donation to the Library, the announcement of the 2015 Friends Volunteer of the Year and a couple of special presentations. This award is given annually to volunteers deemed to have made significant contributions of time, effort and commitment to the endeavors of the Friends of RHPL.
