RAHS March Meeting: “Detroit City of Champions”

March 5, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Rochester-Avon Historical Society (RAHS) will hold its evening meeting for members and the public on March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Rochester Hills Public Library, 500 Olde Town, in Rochester.

The meeting’s guest speaker will be Charles Avison who will discuss the incredible series of events in 1934-1935 that let up to an amazing sports season in Detroit – the season in which the Detroit Tigers, Lions and Red Wings all won their first championships, and the season in which the Motor City could boast having a world record holder or world champion in almost every other sport. Avison will also discuss the movie Play Ball, the first baseball motion picture with sound. It was filmed in Detroit during the 1934 Tiger season, when baseball mania was sweeping the city.

Avison is a graduate of Western Michigan University. He is the author of three books: Detroit City of Champions: The Story of the Most Important Season in Detroit Sports History (2008), and Detroit City of Champions: The Players: Volumes I and II (2013 and 2014).

This program is free and open to the public, no registration required. Students are welcome.

The Rochester-Avon Historical Society (RAHS) was founded in 1969 to help preserve, collect and interpret the history of the greater Rochester area for present and future generations. For more information, including a list of upcoming events, visit online at www.RochesterAvonHistoricalSociety.org.
