Weekly Story Groups – Winter Session I

New year, new choices! Check out our events calendar for details on our new groups in addition to the traditional formats you know and love. Please choose and register for one group per child, so we can accommodate as many children as possible. Children must be residents of Rochester, Rochester Hills or Oakland Township and be registered with his/her own card. Click here

FABULOUS FRIDAY – Preschool Fun with Guy Louis

Friday, January 10

Birth to age 5 with a caregiver

10:30 a.m.

Multipurpose Room

Register all children and adults attending. Guy Louis Sferlazza, of Chautauqua Express will present a “Preschool Fun” concert. Guy will perform appropriate songs and movement activities that will delight “young people of all ages.” Online registration begins Friday, January 3 at 9:00 a.m.

Make a Mat

Saturday, January 11

Grades 4 and up & adults of all ages

9:30 a.m. to noon & 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Multipurpose Room

Register all children and adults attending. Join us for a day of transforming plastic shopping bags into “plarn,” which we will then crochet into sleeping mats. The finished products will be donated to area organizations assisting those in need. Online registration opens Saturday, January 4 at 9:00 a.m.

Around the World

Tuesdays, January 14, February 11, and March 18

Story Room

Join us as we travel to a different part of the world each month. We will enjoy the stories of each land and make a correlating craft to take home. Details pertaining to each month’s session will be available on the events calendar. Online registration begins seven (7) days prior to each session.

Lego Time!
Wednesday, January 15

Grades K-8 with caregiver

Multipurpose Room

Register all children and adults attending. Grades 1+ welcome on their own, Birth to Kindergarten should attend with a caregiver. Build and create spectacular Lego structures.  Online registration begins Wednesday, January 8 at 9:00 a.m.

Reading Comes Alive With Yoga

Fridays, January 17 & 31

Ages 4-5

10:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Story Room

Register all children attending. Children are reading, absorbing the story, doing yoga poses, and exercising their body and brain muscles at once. This method of whole child learning stimulates academic curiosity and presents a fresh and integrative dimension to a class. Online registration begins one (1) week prior to each session.

Family Reading & Science Workshop: Predators and Prey – The Eternal Struggle
Saturdays, January 18, February 22 and March 1

All ages welcome, best suited to ages 6-12

Multipurpose Room

Register all adults and children attending. Presented by U-M Museum of Natural History. The world can be a brutal place—eat or be eaten. In order to deal with this constant dilemma hunters and the hunted have evolved different strategies to give themselves a fighting chance. Join us on a three-workshop journey through time as we explore the strategies that predators and prey have used to try to keep a leg up on the competition. Online registration begins one (1) week prior to each session at 9:00 a.m.

Join us for a visit with multi-award winner Bryan Collier. The illustrator of several titles, including Martin’s Big Words and I, Too Am America, will share with us a presentation on his work during this special Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event. Dinner and Discussion: A Family Book Club
Thursday, January 23

6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Story Room

Best suited to families with elementary and middle school students, but all ages are welcome.

Register all adults and children attending and children should be accompanied by an adult. Join us for pizza, lively discussion and activities based on a different theme each month. See events calendar for monthly themes, read a book as a family, and then come prepared to tell us about it. Registration opens Thursday, January 16 at 9:00 a.m.

Recycled Journal “Writing”
Friday, January 24

Children grades 1 and up

10:00 to 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. or 3:30 to 4:30p.m.

Story Room

Register all children attending. Join us to decorate a journal and create a few journal entries in a fun and creative way. Great for all levels – no writing required! Online registration begins Friday, January 17 at 9:00 a.m. One session per child.

Each child who registers for library programs must have his or her own library card and be a resident of Rochester, Rochester Hills, or Oakland Township. Registration is online. Confirmation numbers are required at the door. All youth programs are funded by the Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library.
