Books on Faith and Books for Kids Big at Summer Book Sale
The Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library’s Summer Used Book and Media Sale, set for July 26 – 31, will be offering up an especially large collection of books in two areas.
Sale chairperson Ann Gruenewald reports, “an unusually large number of religion-oriented books will be offered because of an extraordinary donation from a retired theology professor.” Most will go for $1 for hardcover and large softcover and 50 cents for small paperbacks. Gruenewald also noted “We also have an exceptionally large number of children’s books, especially non-fiction ones.” All children’s books are 50 cents except for a small number of like-new books that are priced slightly higher. The sale is at the library building at 500 Olde Towne Road in downtown Rochester. It will be located in the library’s second floor addition in the space dedicated to the Friends’ used book operation.
Other reasons to stop by? There is much to read and buy beyond the aforementioned religion and kid’s books. There are 40,000 hardcover and paperback books in many other categories, plus lots of fiction. There’s a large selection of DVDs for $2, CDs & VHS cassettes for 50 cents and some board games and puzzles. The sale hours are familiar to regulars with one exception. Because the library is closed on Sundays in the summer, the Bag Day (all the items you can place in a large paper grocery bag for $5) will be Monday morning. Come early for the best selection. Here is other pertinent sale information:
As usual, Friends members get to take part in a pre-sale, set for Wednesday, July 26, from 5:30 – 8 p.m. (New members can join upon entry. Registration at individual $20; family $35; Student/Senior $10 and senior couple $20 are available at the door.)
The general sale open to the public then takes place as follows (note that sale hours are slightly different from the library’s hours of operation):
- Thursday, July 27: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Friday, July 28: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Saturday, July 29: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Monday, July 31: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Bag Day (explained above).
Library patrons donate books and other sales material throughout the year. For more info on how to donate media and on the value of a Friends membership, go to www.rhpl.org and click on the Friends link at the bottom of the home page.
Proceeds from the event go to the Friends, the Library’s primary volunteer support group. The Friends in turn fund many library needs and improvements beyond its public budget from Rochester, Rochester Hills and Oakland Twp.
