Go Behind the Scenes with Oakland University’s Production of ‘A Chorus Line’

A Chorus Line, perhaps the ultimate backstage musical, winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, will open at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, in Varner Studio Theatre at Oakland University.

A Chorus Line, which is a stunning musical-vérité about dancers auditioning for the chorus of a Broadway show, is a powerful metaphor for all human aspiration. It highlights the achingly poignant ambitions of professional Broadway ‘gypsies’ to land a job.

When it opened, the show’s brilliant and complex fusion of dance, song and compelling authentic drama took the theatre world by storm, and not just at the Tony Awards. It also won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.

A Chorus Line was a smash on Broadway, but it began life at New York’s famed Public Theatre, and David Gram, director of OU’s production, notes that seeing the show in Varner Studio Theatre will offer audiences an experience similar to the one that A Chorus Line’s first audiences had. Onlookers will be up-close and personal with the actors.

There will be eleven shows between March 23 and April 2. Tickets are $20 general, $12 students and everyone at the Friday, March 24, 10:00 a.m. matinee.

OU’s Varner Studio Theatre is located at 371 Varner Drive. Apple smart phone users can find the location by entering Varner Hall into their Maps app. Campus maps are available at oakland.edu/map. Ample free parking will be available in lots 24 and 26.

Tickets may be purchased online without service fees at StarTickets.com or by phone at (800) 585-3737. They can also be purchased at the Varner Box Office on OU’s campus. Tickets ordered online or by phone can be picked up at the box office one hour before the performance begins.
