Whether you want to blame Old Man Winter, Jack Frost or Punxsutawney Phil, the snow keeps coming and coming. With at least six more weeks of this, you may as well enjoy the winter.
Cross Country Skiing
There are two basic kinds of cross-country skiing, Classic style and Skate style; either way, it’s quite the workout. Take advantage of the local Metroparks or county parks and try it. You can rent skis from REI or some of the parks rent as well (call ahead and ask).
Downhill Skiing and Snowboarding
If you would rather let gravity do most of the work, then Alpine Skiing may be more your thing. With over 50 ski areas in Michigan to choose from, you’re sure to find one close to home. Better yet, make it a weekend getaway for a family vacation or a romantic trip.
Many of the up-north resorts have fine dining, spa treatments, and extra activities such as tubing or a waterpark. For a southeast ski resort, read the Rochester Media local ski hill round up.
Snowshoeing
It’s like hiking in clown shoes. You can rent snowshoes at the same places you can rent skis. They seem easier to use than Nordic skis but can provide a good workout just the same. Out your back door, at a local park, or try something a bit more adventurous. Read the Rochester Media article on Snowshoeing the Eben Ice Caves.
Snowmobiling
Want to go faster with less physical interaction? You may want to try snowmobiling in Michigan. From state forests to national forests with miles and miles of trails that connect them, snowmobilers have a lot to keep them busy. Find trails, rentals, and more at the Michigan.org link to this winter activity.
Ice Fishing
“Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan’s premiere outdoor activities, Michigan Fishing, for FREE! The 2014 Free Fishing Weekends are scheduled for this winter: February 15 & 16 and this summer: June 7 & 8,” ~Michigan DNR website.
Big Winter Adventures in Michigan
If the above list doesn’t have enough excitement for you, then you may want to try driving a dog sled team or ice climbing a frozen waterfall.
Perhaps a quiet, low-impact activity is better for you and the family. Go ice-skating or sledding. Nevertheless, whatever you decide, stay hydrated, dress for the weather and hurry-up, winter won’t last forever …
