Across the State to Muskegon

Muskegon, Michigan is a weekend destination; one or two nights will rejuvenate a family or a couple looking for a nice, close to home, drive-to weekend getaway.

“Whatever the season, you feel the lake effect the moment you arrive in Muskegon County. It’s in the way the sun shimmers on the water, the snow falls gently on an upturned palm, and that impossibly happy look on your children’s faces. It’s the feeling you get in Muskegon County,” states the Visit Muskegon Website.

All four seasons offer visitors more than enough to have a blast for a few days. Golf, 26 miles of beach, fall color change, ice fishing – to name a few. Lake Michigan views all day, sunsets in the evening, and food … good food.

Dining in Muskegon

From Texas but with Michigan connections, Jeremy and Jamie Paquin came to Michigan to open Mia & Grace Bakery and Bistro. “Muskegon has a small-town feel but the culture and exposure of city life. And since we’ve been downtown, it has just grown. We have seen the changes. We want to be a part of that,” said the Paquins about finding the perfect place for the restaurant, “The owners did 90 percent of the work themselves except for mechanical items. Mia & Grace then opened as a ‘farm-to-table’ restaurant concept serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with tasteful ambiance.”

Toast ‘N Jams is open for breakfast and lunch in a 1950’s atmosphere with a Route 66 road trip feel. “We fry in cholesterol free Fry-On Oil. Considering Your Health, we use only cholesterol free vegetable shortening for deep-frying. Our kitchen staff is trained for Heart Healthy requests,” states the menu section of the restaurant’s website. A colorful menu with pages of options will keep hungry people coming back.

Happy Hour at the Lake House is a good deal. Sunday through Friday, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sunday through Saturday after 10:00 p.m. patrons will be treated to food and drink specials. It’s worth making the effort to visit during the Happy Hour times. Views of the lake and marina are nice, so ask for a window table.
