Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Military.
The Greater Rochester Memorial Day Committee is hosting two separate programs to honor veterans. The first event will take place at Mt. Avon Cemetery, located at 2nd Street and Wilcox Street, at 9:00 a.m. followed by a second program at Veteran Memorial Pointe, located at 1015 S. Livernois Rd, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
There will not be a parade in between the two programs; however, an exploratory Greater Rochester Memorial Day Parade Sub-Committee has been formed. Contact the committee or sub-committee via Mary Modetz at mamo36@aol.com.
Preparing for the Memorial Day Celebrations, various volunteers and the Rochester Fire Department will be placing flags (provided) and recognizing Veterans’ at their gave sites in Mt. Avon Cemetery on Friday, May 25, at 10:00 a.m. and again at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (The rain date is Saturday, May 26 at 8:00 a.m.)
Participate with tending to veteran graves, placing flags, and announcing the veterans’ names aloud in honor of their service, please meet at the Mt. Avon Cemetery.
