Halloween Costumes used to be Scary
Children used to imitate scary creatures from film and legend, such as vampires, ghosts, werewolves or the Frankenstein monster. Nowadays, kids choose to be the latest trend, superhero, or pop star – still a result of the media culture – but not so frightening.
Morphsuits are huge. Made popular at sporting events, these colorful body suits have evolved. Some inflate; others look like skeletons, but most are stretchy bodysuits of bright green, yellow or blue. Many pay homage to a local team’s color (green for Michigan State, for example). Expect to see many boys sporting these outfits this year. Also a hit this year for young men are Ninja costumes – all black hooded outfits with a sword – a true martial art favorite for decades.
For girls this Halloween, it’s Monster High costumes. They come from the doll series and according to the sales staff at Party City in Rochester Hills, “are very popular this year.”
Teens and adults will go with more of a movie theme this year. Look for many “Avengers” trick-or-treating and showing up at parties.
Still Shopping
All the Party City stores have converted over to Halloween City. The Rochester Hills location has many pre-packaged costumes and dressing rooms to try them on. They also have a ton of extras, such as wigs, masks, vampire teeth, plastic swords, etc. to help you tailor-fit your new look.
In addition to the all the regular Party City stores, several temporary Halloween City stores have popped up for the month of October. They have all the same stuff including many yard props and decorations to complete the Halloween look for your house or business.
At either place, look for the staff member wearing an orange smock to help you find the costume you’re looking for.
