Rochester Community Schools Hosts Rachel’s Challenge

The Rochester Community PTA Council is excited to announce that the powerful Rachel’s Challenge program will return this fall to each of the district’s eight middle schools and high schools. Between September 27 and October 8, all middle and high school students will participate in the second phase of Rachel’s Challenge, called “Rachel’s Legacy.”

This impactful enrichment program takes teens and preteens to the next level to empower and motivate them to harness their natural passion and energy toward bringing about positive, cultural change in their school environment and community by accepting the challenge to start “chain reactions of kindness and compassion.”

Rachel’s Legacy is the next step in the Rachel’s Challenge program, picking up where the first year left off. Rachel’s Legacy focuses on uncovering the potential and significance found in everyone. Students are challenged to open their minds and see just how great an impact one person can make in the world. This second year program incorporates more stories from Rachel’s life, as well as some of the stories the Rachel’s Challenge organization has witnessed as people experience their program across the country.  Interestingly, many schools report that the Rachel’s Legacy program is even more impactful than Year One’s program.

Rachel Scott was the first person killed at Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. Rachel’s acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her six diaries have become the foundation for the most life-changing school program in America.

Powerful audio/video footage of Rachel’s Challenge holds students spell-bound during a one-hour school presentation that motivates them to positive change in the way they treat others. This is followed by a 45 minute training session involving both adult and student leaders.  This is an interactive session that shows how to sustain the momentum created by the assembly.

In addition to the daytime programs, all parents and community members are invited and encouraged to attend one of three evening community Rachel’s Challenge events (September 29, 7:00 pm, Rochester HS; October 6, 7:00 pm, Stoney Creek HS; October 8, 7:00 pm, Adams HS)  These events are intended for adults, but students grade 6 and older are welcome. Parental discretion is suggested for younger children.

This program is sponsored by the following generous community partners: The PTSAs from the following middle and high schools: Adams HS, Rochester HS, Stoney Creek HS, Hart MS, Reuther MS, Van Hoosen MS, West MS. This year, other contributors include Vitasalus Inc./Cloutier Family, the Rochester Lions Club, the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club, Mike and Kim Williams, Crittenton Hospital, Rochester Youth Soccer League, and Rochester Community PTA Council.
