Hundreds of Seniors Fed Each Day Through Meals on Wheels Program at the OPC

This past year the Older Persons’ Commission’s (OPC) Meals on Wheels program tirelessly prepared and served 116,151 meals. This astounding number is made possible by the dedication of Becky Wuornos, OPC Nutrition Manager along with OPC staff and volunteers.

Meals on Wheels serves nine communities including Addison, Auburn Hills, Brandon, Lake Orion, Oakland Township, Oxford, Independence Township, Rochester and Rochester Hills. Approximately 375 seniors receive a hot meal each weekday and another 40 receive a cold meal, Meals on Wheels also provides 145 meals each weekend.

“The holidays are a very special time for the Nutrition Department at OPC,” said Wuornos. “We understand that many seniors do not have family and miss out on a traditional meal. During Christmas, our wonderful volunteers decorate an assortment of cookies and place one dozen cookies in a box that is wrapped and delivered with their holiday meal.”

Meals on Wheels’ volunteer drivers are often the only face a senior will see throughout the day. “We deliver a nutritious meal, but we are also providing them with a friendly face and a safety check,” said Wuornos. “Our volunteers are the eyes and ears of the community”

The OPC Meals on Wheels service has two very important fundraisers each year to help support the hundreds of seniors served. The Charity Event, held this coming year is on April 29 at the Royal Park Hotel, and the 5K Run/Walk for Meals will be held on June 4. Both events are a wonderful way to support Meals on Wheels at the OPC.

“Our goal is to provide a nutritious meal for seniors who can’t prepare meals for themselves,” said Wuornos. “We don’t want any senior to go without a meal so with the help of the community and our volunteers, we’re able to accomplish this goal.”

The holidays are the perfect time to give back to those in our community who need assistance. Be a part of Meals on Wheels at the Older Persons’ Commission in Rochester through donations or volunteering today. Find out more at www.OPCSeniorCenter.org or by calling 248-656-1403 ext. 0.
