Judge Law Bridges Judicial and Legislative Branches

David Law photoJudge David Law of the 52-1 District Court in Novi plans to use his experience as a former Michigan legislator to improve the relationship between judges and lawmakers while serving on the Michigan District Judges’ Association (MDJA) Legislative Committee which he recently joined.

“When I was a state representative, it was invaluable to me to hear from individuals who had first-hand experience and expertise regarding issues we were debating in the legislature,” Law said. “Now I want to utilize my experience as a judge who serves on the MDJA’s Legislative Committee to help lawmakers better understand the needs of the courts and local law enforcement.”

The MDJA Legislative Committee reviews proposed legislation and makes recommendations to the MJDA Executive Board and the MDJA membership. Ionia County Chief District Court Judge Raymond Voet, co-chair of the committee, said Law’s legislative experience will be vital to improving the relationship between the legislature and judiciary.

“We are pleased that someone with Judge Law’s legislative experience is joining us. We look forward to his unique insights on the complicated issues we review,” Voet said.

Gov. Rick Snyder appointed Law last February to fill a vacancy on the 52-1 District Court which covers the cities of Novi, South Lyon, Walled Lake and Wixom; the townships of Commerce, Highland, Lyon, and Milford; and the villages of Milford and Wolverine Lake.

Prior to his appointment, Law worked as an assistant attorney general in the Children & Youth Division representing the Michigan Department of Human Services. Law also served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2005 through 2008, representing West Bloomfield, Commerce Township and Wolverine Lake.
