The Friends of the Rochester Hills Public Library winter sale of used books (and assorted other media) goes on through Sunday, February 3 despite losing a day. Flooding caused by a broken frozen pipe at the Library at 500 Olde Towne Road in downtown Rochester forced the building’s closure on Thursday.
The sale takes place at the Friends’ second floor used book sale facility at the Library and despite the frigid weather, sales opening night (Wednesday) were “way above normal,” according to Friends Book sale chairperson Ann Gruenewald.
Each Friends book sale has a different mix of items and some special attractions. What’s it this time? Gruenewald said: “We have a large collection of World War II-related books. We have also had several large donations of DVDs—I’ll say it’s an exceptional collection. Also, we have a large number of large print books.”
Except for a few higher quality items that are priced individually, hardcover and large softcover books are $1, paperbacks and children’s books are 50 cents. Also available are many CDs, books on CD, board and digital games and VHS tapes that are also inexpensively priced.
Public sales hours for the remaining days are:
- Friday, February 1, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Saturday, February 2, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Sunday, February 3, 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday is also Bag Day, where buyers can fill a grocery bag of remaining items for $5 a bag.
Note that the sale hours vary slightly from the library’s hours of operation on those days.
The books and other sales material are donated by library patrons throughout the year. For more info on how to donate and on the value of a Friends membership, go to www.rhpl.org and click on the Friends link at the bottom of the home page.
Proceeds go to the Friends, which is the library’s prime non-public support group and is dedicated to promoting a closer relationship between the library and its constituents through fund raising and special events.
