Meals on Wheels Deliver More to Seniors this Holiday Season

Meals on Wheels at OPC Makes Spirits Bright for Seniors this Holiday Season

Holiday surprises are delivered throughout the month of December to the recipients of the Older Persons’ Commission (OPC) Meals on Wheels (MOW) program. The first installment of holiday cheer is the annual poinsettias delivery. Thanks to a special donation from Ray and Mary Elizabeth Nicholson, every MOW recipient receives a beautiful poinsettia, delivered to their home.  The Nicholson’s enjoy brightening up the holidays of the MOW recipients and have once again so generously donated the poinsettias to make that happen.

Another one of our special deliveries is a box of cookies baked and decorated by OPC members and community volunteers.

During the holiday season, the efforts of the OPC Meals on Wheels program are more important than ever.  “It’s a lonely time of year if you’re not surrounded by family,” said Becky Wuornos, OPC Nutrition Manager. “The daily visits from the volunteers delivering a nutritious meal go a long way to combat senior isolation.”

In total, the Older Persons’ Commission (OPC) Nutrition Program provided 117, 959 meals to local seniors in 2016. OPC Meals on Wheels serves nine communities including Addison, Auburn Hills, Brandon, Lake Orion, Independence Township, Oxford, Oakland Township, Rochester and Rochester Hills. Approximately 375 seniors receive a hot meal each weekday. The program is designed for seniors who are unable to shop and/or prepare meals. In addition to delivering a hot nutritious meal seven days a week, OPC volunteers also provide a wellness check to homebound seniors.

The holidays are a perfect time to give back to those in our community who need assistance. Become a part of Meals on Wheels at the Older Persons’ Commission in Rochester by donating or volunteering today.

Another way to give to the Meals on Wheels program is by becoming a sponsor of the 15th Annual OPC Charity Event on April 28, 2017 at the Royal Park Hotel.  All proceeds from ‘A Night in Monte Carlo’ benefit the Meals on Wheels program. Find out more at www.opcseniorcenter.org.
