The Montessori School Rochester (Spirit of the Child LLC) today announced that it has relocated to allow for increasing enrollment and expanded educational programming. The school was the brainchild of Rochester Hills’ residents Ron and Joanne Shango.  Joanne Shango, who serves as the Head of School, has more than 20 years of experience in Montessori education. As a mother, she was unable to find an authentic and affordable Montessori School education in Greater Rochester for her own children, so she took matters into her own hands.

“Education is one of the most important gifts we can give our children,” said Joanne Shango. “I knew we needed to make this happen—for our children and the children of our family, friends and neighbors. We’ve had tremendous community support and without it this school would not have been possible.”

The Montessori School Rochester opened in 2012 with 27 students in a 7,000 sq. ft. building on S. Rochester Rd., also in Rochester Hills. The new school is approximately 35,000 sq. ft. and employs a team of more than 25 teachers, administrators, and support staff. It also includes a large gymnasium, kitchen with in-house, healthy catering by professional chefs, as well as facilities for expanded art and music education. The move also allows the school to expand its curriculum into adolescent education. Beginning in fall 2018, The Montessori School Rochester will accept students through the eighth grade and expects have more than 200 students enrolled.

The school’s teachings are based on the philosophy developed by Maria Montessori. Her pioneering work created a blueprint for educating children, from learning disabled to the gifted and for helping children become self-motivated, independent and lifelong learners.

The goal of the school is to offer every child a safe and nurturing environment to grow and thrive, while fostering a love of learning while building a strong foundation of academic achievement, social awareness and self confidence in every student.
