Incumbents Look to Extend their Term of Service
Rochester Community Schools Board of Education members Scott Muska, Kristin Bull and Mike Zabat announced this week they will seek to retain their seats on the seven-member nonpartisan board in the general election November 3, 2020.
Their reelection campaign will focus on themes of stability, equity and gratitude.
“These past four months have been the most challenging of our years of service, but also the most rewarding,” said Bull, the board’s president. “We are grateful to the teachers, counselors, administrators and school district support staff that have given so much since schools in Michigan closed in March.
“In guiding RCS through these unprecedented times, our goal as board members has been to support these professionals as they maintain connections with our students. The health and wellness of all 15,000 students has always been our priority; they are at the forefront of everything we do.”
Zabat agreed.
“Opening in the fall will be complex given the health and economic uncertainty we face,” he said. “I’m thankful we have a top-notch group of professionals to work with and I’m confident this team will continue to provide the best education possible for our kids, regardless of what the future brings.”
Muska echoed Zabat’s characterization of the complexity of leading a K-12 school district during a pandemic.
“As a district and as a community, these challenges had us all learning about ourselves and one another,” he said. “What we have learned is that we are surrounded by talented, relentless people who love our community and always put the best interest of our children first.”
Bull was elected to the board in 2014. She served on the TI2020 Task Force that studied and eventually recommended the $185 million technology and infrastructure bond approved by voters in 2015. Before being elected by her peers as president in 2019, she served as treasurer and vice president.
Bull has lived in Rochester Hills with her husband and two children — a 2020 RCS graduate and current high schooler — since 2006. She works in event production, marketing and advertising for Crain Communications. She is seeking a six-year term on the Board.
Muska was appointed to the board in 2019. Before joining the Board, Muska served on the RCS Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force. Muska is a business owner and investor who has spent most of his career in business development and operations. He is also a professional speaker and a former college and professional basketball assistant coach.
Muska lives in Rochester with his wife and preschool daughter. He is seeking a six-year term on the Board.
The RCS Board of Education’s mission is to provide a quality education in a caring atmosphere for students to attain the necessary skills and knowledge to become lifelong learners and contribute to a diverse, interdependent and changing world. The Board of Education’s vision is that all students work toward the goal of being college-ready, career-ready and life-ready.
Zabat has served on the board since 2012, including two years as secretary and for three years as treasurer, his current role. As a board member, he was part of the team that appointed Dr. Robert Shaner as Superintendent in 2013. He also served on the TI2020 Task Force.
Zabat has lived in Rochester Hills with his wife and two children — both RCS graduates — for 25 years. He is an aerospace engineer and a Principal at System Strategy, Inc. He is seeking a two-year term on the Board.
