Neighborhood House Begins Urgent COVID-19 Emergency Fund

#GivingTuesdayNow is a global day of giving and unity, set to take place on May 5, as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

At a time when we are all experiencing the pandemic, generosity is what brings all people across the globe. Generosity gives everyone power to make a positive change in the lives of others and is a fundamental value anyone can act on. It’s a day for everyone around the world to stand together and give back in all ways, no matter who or where we are.

Neighborhood House is participating in #GivingTuesdayNow to bring awareness to the many ways people can make a difference from home. In the past month, Neighborhood House has expanded their home food delivery service to include more vulnerable households and implemented a drive-thru service at their food pantry.

Neighborhood House is already witnessing the devastating effects of COVID-19 in our community. In the upcoming months, Neighborhood House will need increased financial resources to cover rent and other basic expenses due to job loss. By donating to Neighborhood House, you are directly helping people within the community who are struggling to make ends meet.

Emily*, a neighbor in need, was unexpectedly out of a job within one week because of restaurant closures. She had come to Neighborhood House for help in the past and was finally on her way to self-sustainability. Unfortunately, the restaurant she was employed at was forced to reduce their staff due to COVID-19. Emily was left without an income. She had no choice but to seek help and has now been going to the Neighborhood House Food Pantry for assistance until she can find another job.

Sadly, Emily’s situation is not uncommon.

“Those who have not needed our services for several years are returning, as well as people who have never needed assistance” said Neighborhood House Executive Director, Kathy Losinski.

“We have experienced a 70% increase in visits to our food pantry compared to this time last year. It truly is a time to help when you can and where you can. We are participating in #GivingTuesdayNow to help spread awareness of the safe ways people can make a difference and connect with each other even while practicing social distancing.”
