RHFD and Comfort Keepers Partner to Keep Seniors Safe
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recently announced that the Rochester Hills Fire Department and Comfort Keepers, a local home visiting agency, have been selected to received the 2015 NFPA Remembering When Scholarship. his team is one of only 25 in the United States and Canada to receive this scholarship, and the funding will allow the team to attend the NFPA’s training conference on fire and fall prevention.
According to NFPA statistics, adults aged 65 and older are two times as likely to be killed in a fire at home, and falling is a leading cause of death from injuries for older adults as well. NFPA hosts this conference every year as part of its continual effort to help reduce fires and falls among older adults.
“These communities are fortunate to have dedicated professionals interested in doing all they can to help older adults live safely in their homes as long as possible,” states NFPA Senior Project Manager Karen Berard-Reed. “Each team will return home with the ability to facilitate engaging fire and fall prevention presentations and personalized home visits for older adults.”
The Rochester Hills Fire Department will be represented by Public Education Specialist Nancy Butty and Comfort Keepers will be represented by Annette Werner. Through their participation, Rochester Hills will be able to grow a strong Remembering When program and conduct group training sessions locally for older adults.
“Public Safety is our number one priority in Rochester Hills,” states Mayor Bryan K. Barnett. “Our Fire Department is committed to keeping our community engaged and finding new innovative ways to support our older residents.”
