A new era for Oakland University Esports has begun, as Head Coach Carl Leone has announced the inaugural Rocket League team, which include Rochester Hills resident and Rochester High School Graduate Edward Azzam.
Edward Azzam, Justin Janulewicz, Matthew Leuker, Billy Sawyer and Seth Tison are all members of the 2020 recruiting class.
“Our inaugural Rocket League team is incredibly talented. All of our players are ranked in the top 3 percent of all players in the United States,” Leone said. “Our players collectively cover a wide range of specialties including: aggressive, defensive, mechanical, patient, communication, and sharpshooter. I anticipate our team being locally dominant and nationally competitive.”
Leone hosted tryouts for the inaugural Esports teams in June, which consisted of more than 50 players ranking in the top 12 percent of North America.
In addition to Rocket League, the Golden Grizzlies will compete in League of Legends and Super Smash Bros. in their first season of Division I competition. Student-athletes on those inaugural teams will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Oakland Esports team features a unique partnership with Team Renegades, a professional Esports team based at GameTime in Auburn Hills.
Will someone tell me what this sport is and how it is played?
Hi James – take a look at this article for more information about eSports – the “e” is for electronic. eSports are played online using a computer. Here’s the link: https://rochestermedia.com/esports-added-to-oakland-university-athletics-program/
